THE ORIGINS OF GIN
From a medicinal drink, gin soon became one of the most drunk cocktails in the world
First created in Holland in the 17th century as a form of medicine, it was called Genever and was very different from the (usually) clear spirit, which we know today as Gin. In the 1700s the British Army used Gin combined with tonic water as a tonic for soldiers in war. Soon the fame of gin spread throughout Europe and in the middle of the 18th century, Gin was already a widespread drink, with about 400 distilleries in Amsterdam alone!
